Hi! Welcome to the Learn with StackMantle series.

- Trade Secrets
- Patents
- Copyrights
- Trademarks
Trade Secrets
Trade secrets refer to specific, private information that is important for a business and its survival. It may be because the piece of information provides the said business, a competitive advantage in its marketplace.
Example: Recipes kept secret by Coca Cola or KFC etc.
Patents
A patent is a type of intellectual property right that offers protection limited to a certain time period. Patents are awarded for inventions and discoveries that are completely new, non-repeated and USEFUL. Patents provide legal protection to its owners, from its sale and marketing by others.
Example: Patenting technology for some innovation.
Copyrights
Copyrights are a type of intellectual property protection that protects original works such as literary works, music, art and more. In the current day scenario, computer software, code and ideas in the same space too can be protected with copyrights.
Example: Copyrights of music you / someone has created, contents, images.
Trademarks
Trademarks refer to phrases, words, or symbols that provide distinction to a brand from another.
Example: The apple with one bite taken gets directly related to the tech giant - Apple. One interesting fact about trademarks is the fact that these can be held for indefinite time periods unlike copyrights and patents which have a predefined period of validity.
