YouTube vs TikTok is a discussion that is going on and on over all the platforms, be it YouTube, Instagram or TikTok. Today, we bring to you StackMantle’s take on the controversy.
Let us begin with some usage related statistics for both the applications, Youtube has 256 million active ,monthly users in India, whereas TikTok boasts of 119 million active users in India. Don’t let just these numbers fool you, India witnessed launch of YouTube in mid 2008 Source and TikTok’s earlier known version “musical.ly” was launched in Mid 2018 Source that makes average growth of 21.3 million users per year for YouTube and average growth of 59.9 million users per year for TikTok.
Still, these numbers mean very little because there are several factors that have their effect on the user base of the applications. One such major factor is ‘increased access to the internet’ which has drastically increased since the introduction of Jio!
Another popular argument that is put forward is that TikTok serves more cringe worthy content; it is true to some extent but there is a catch here too. Here,a concept called ‘echo chamber’ is in play.
Echo chamber: An echo chamber is an environment where a person only encounters information or opinions that reflect and reinforce their own. Source
TikTok’s algorithm is strong with the echo chamber thing, once you spend time consuming cringe content and/or interact with it, the algorithm considers such videos as your choice and you get to see more of those. Just like the way it works with the explore menu in your Instagram app.
Now moving towards the content argument, YouTube has longer videos, with more time consuming production process and TikTok content is limited to 15 to 20 seconds. There is a simple answer to that, different platforms, different nature of the content added.
Moral of the story is,
Though these two applications both have video content but nothing else is similar. From the video structure (Horizontal for YouTube to Vertical for TikTok) to the origin of the content, everything is different. You cannot compare apples with oranges, you like YouTube better? Great go ahead watch it. You enjoy TikTok more! Great, have fun. There is no fight for superiority here. Peace!
